Day two at Wanderlust California began for me in the massive Gaiam Tent that sits just outside my bedroom!

Senior Prana Flow teachers Simon Park and Twee Merrigan teamed up with DJ HyFi for an energetic Vinyasa class at eight in the morning. It was supremely cool to see DJ HyFi (Ian Hyman) rock the biggest Wanderlust stage just a few short days after I taught Spanda Flow with him at the beloved Yoga Union in Portland, Oregon. Simon Park is known for his up-tempo, intense classes and his daredevil arm balancing skills. Vibing with early start by beginning class slowly and comfortably, he asked us to work in pairs, teaming up for leisurely companion stretches. Soon, however, Simon threw down creative sequencing and his trademark high flying arm balances while DJ HyFi re-mixed thick down tempo electronica with dub reggae and liquid drum n’ bass to create a wickedly lush sound. This pulsating sonic stew awaked our prana before the seven month pregnant Twee Merrigan wound down class in her elegant and heartfelt style.

Next on the agenda was advanced back bending with Anusara’s John Friend. Class began with a brief introduction to Anusara’s methodology of cultivating depth in these poses by opening the “four corners” of the body, the shoulders and hips. John then jumped headlong into a sequence that can only be described as killer. Moving with passion and flair from handstand and forearm stand to a series of long holds and transitions in various forms of Urdhva Dhanurasana, the class built in intensity toward standing drop backs, Eka Pada Raja Kapotasana 1 and Dwi Pada Viparita Dandasana. There was simply nowhere to go but further into the heart as the Shakti poured fourth inside the Anusara Pavilion. When John asked two of his most senior teachers Noah Maze and Sianna Sherman to demo, a palpable spark of intensity coursed through our veins. Yogis released enthusiastic howls throughout class as the mid-morning heat pounded students not shaded under the Pringles potato chip shaped tent.

After a light lunch I spent part of my afternoon at the absolutely stunning High Camp, 8,200 feet up. Possibly the greatest environment ever, High Camp is the ultimate chill zone, an enchanted play land that mixes a gorgeous swimming pool and hot tub, bar and grill, yoga space and epic views of snow capped peaks. While yogis practiced with the sweet Kathryn Budig in a converted ice skating rink from the 1960 Winter Olympics, live DJs played the sultry psychedelic dub and down tempo. Sipping on a pina colada with good friends and going for a swim after 12 hours of yoga in a day and a half felt like heaven on earth.

The only thing that could have drawn me away from High Camp was the magnificent blessing of interviewing John Friend for YOGANONYMOUS. John and I explored his thoughts on the similarities between yoga and music, how technology shapes the expansion of consciousness and the purpose of practicing hatha yoga. I cannot wait to share this special interview as speaking with John was truly a magical moment for me. Anusara Yoga has radically transformed my life and to speak with its founder and guiding force was downright radical. If you are interested in reading more about how Anusara blew open my heart, mind, and body click here.

Early in the evening popular Vinyasa flow teacher and longtime activist Sean Corne lead a gathering in the Gaiam tent that highlighted her Off the Mat into the World non-profit organization (www.offthematintotheworld.org). Sean gave a stirring, impassioned speech about the power of yoga to inspire our community to participate in grass roots social change. Founded in 2007 with Hala Khouri and Suzanne Sterling, Off the Mat into the World has raised over two million dollars to help impoverished and underserved populations in Uganda, Cambodia, Haiti, and the United States. Michael Franti played a short set accompanying a brief asana sequence before a dance party broke out and the celebratory vibe could not be contained.

MC Yogi and the Sacred Sound Society ignited Wanderlust’s main stage early on Friday by showcasing their mix of hip-hop and yoga philosophy that is anchored by conscious lyrics overflowing with inspiration and love. With a three-piece horn section in tow and his wife Amanda Giacomini Shakti-fying beats from a laptop, night two jumped off. With hands waving in the air thousands of yogis began to bump and grind their sore bodies to the infectious rhymes. Calling upon each of us to “give love, give your love away”, MC Yogi enchantingly brought us deeper into our one true heart.

Set break was a sight to behold. First Shakti Sunfire (www.shaktisunfire) captivated the audience with a hula hoop/dance/yoga thrill ride set to a remixed version of Jimi Hendrix’s “Standing Next to a Mountain”. If there were a roof to the joint, Shakti would have torn it off as she moved like a graceful inferno. Then, Marni Scarloff and another woman (sorry, I don’t know your name!) took the stage for a hybrid of belly and fire dancing that stopped everyone with a beating heart dead in their tracks. Suffice it to say, set break was hot.

Michael Franti and Spearhead closed out night two with their patented and popular anthemic mix of blistering rock, reggae, and mindful pop. The crowd was amped, dancing to every single rhythm and singing back every chanted vocal. Franti, a dedicated yogi himself, spends his life pouring love into the world and Wanderlust gave it all back on Friday night as the main stage entertainment wound down. With late night dance parties and teahouse conversations to follow, all the blissful yogis surged into the night.

It’s hard to believe that Yoga used to be practiced ONLY by men…

Today, in the West, we tend to think of it as a female dominated practice (although that is changing!), but up until recently women weren’t even allowed to practice. The ‘new’ yoga that has emerged is being transformed by female teachers across the globe, and the new movie, Yogawoman, teaches you how and why this change has occurred.

From the website:

Yoga was brought to the west from India by a lineage of male teachers. Now there’s a generation of women who are leading the way. They’re strong they’re inspiring and they’re radically changing peoples lives. From the busy streets of Manhattan to the dusty slums of Kenya YOGAWOMANuncovering a global phenomenon that has changed the face of yoga forever.

A quiet revolution brews in yoga studios, hospitals, and living rooms around the globe: In record numbers, women are discovering their own strength, vitality, peace, and power through yoga. Reclaiming this ancient spiritual path from its traditionally male form, the result is a radical transformation of modern yoga, as we know it.

Led by a new generation of dynamic female teachers, this “new” yoga replaces the male-centered, rigid style with a distinctly feminine practice that honors intuition, family, flow, connection, community, activism, and the cyclical nature of women’s lives.
