StandUp Paddling is a is taking off across the globe.
We have our Polynesian friends to thank for that, as it has deep roots from the Polynesian culture. The popularity of SUP originated in the Hawaiian islands. In Hawaiian, it translates to Ku Hoe He’e Nalu; to stand, to paddle, to surf a wave.
Some famous surfers such as Laird Hamilton, Dave Kamala, Brian Keaulana, Rick Thomas and Archie Kalepa started SUPing as an alternative training method while the surf was down.
Leave it to western yogis to turn up the volume and replace the yoga mat with the paddleboard. That’s right…SUPyoga. If there is a body of water nearby, there are probably SUPyoga classes in your area. And, it’s a fantastic way practice and stay cool in the summer heat.
StandUp Paddle Yoga is a unique, adventure-style approach to yoga asana practice. It requires even more focus, attention and balance than you might expect. In addition, it’s fun, challenging and inspiring to be surrounded by the elements.
