About ISHTA

Mission

To blend the ancient and contemporary yoga teachings of Hatha, Tantra and Ayurveda into a system that caters to individual students’ needs. Whether you are looking for physical strength or greater peace of mind, we provide you with a tailored practice to enhance your health and well-being. Yoga has many benefits, and at ISHTA you will not miss out on any of them!

Style

ISHTA Yoga is the home of South African Tantric Yoga Master Alan Finger’s unique system of yoga. We strive to bring you to the Tantric state of balance. Our style encourages contentment and calm through the melding of breath, flow, strength building, alignment, and meditation. We seek to offer every type of student a well-rounded yet specific practice. Whether you choose meditation, core flow, restorative, or a basics class, you will find yourself feeling better every day.

What is ISHTA?

ISHTA stands for Integrated Science of Hatha, Tantra, and Ayurveda, or a combination of physical, energetic, and healing practices. ISHTA is also a Sanskrit word translating to ‘that which resonates with the individual spirit,’ emphasizing the personal journey we encourage and guide our students to embrace.

The Teachers

Alan Finger has trained ISHTA instructors around the world, but only at ISHTA in NYC can students of all levels work intimately with the Yoga Master himself and some of his most highly trained teachers. Our teachers bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to their teachings. We pride ourselves on the expertise, personal attention and warmth our teachers provide.

How ISHTA Works with You

Our goal is to make your yoga practice convenient and accessible any time, anywhere. We offer group classes, as well as private lessons at the studio or in students’ homes or offices. We also offer Yoga Alliance certified teacher trainings to those looking for even greater enrichment.

ISHTA Meditation:

Yogic breathing can also increase awareness of the breath and reduce stress in the body. Prenatal yoga classes can also increase a mother’s confidence in her body’s ability, necessary for birth and motherhood. There are also opportunities for mothers to share concerns, laughter, and thoughts about labor, birth, and beyond.

Become a Modern Yogi in an Ancient Lineage Through the ISHTA Yoga Teacher Training.

We offer 200-Hour and 300-Hour Yoga Alliance certified teacher training programs.

Our Teacher Training programs provide a uniquely modern, individualized, and integrated approach to the ancient science of yoga. The ISHTA lineage and teachings provide a comprehensive foundation for all aspects of yoga. We cover asana, the practice and teachings of the subtle and causal body anatomies, pranayama and kriya techniques, meditation, Tantric philosophy, and Ayurveda, the ancient Indian science of life. Through in-depth daily asana practice, posture labs, practice teaching, anatomy, and lectures on topics ranging from the energetic bodies to neurophysiology, the ISHTA-trained practitioner is able to approach and embrace yoga in all of its forms.

ISHTA trains its teachers to acquire and master the skills needed to excel in group classes of all levels, private lessons, corporate lessons, and specialty yoga classes. ISHTA trainees emerge from training feeling confident and ready to practice and teach what they have learned. ISHTA supports all personal journeys, whether you want to teach or simply deepen your own personal practice.

Testimonials

“ISHTA is a life changing environment and practice. The teachers are incredibly well trained and humble. Classes range from gentle and restorative to active and challenging. The teachers and philosophy acknowledge that life is constantly changing and shifting and this is reflected in the diversity of classes. Most importantly ISHTA will help you to recognize your own potential, physically, mentally, or otherwise.” - Nicole Adriana

“Complete yoga studio! ISHTA Yoga is not just about physical health, nor is it about getting blissed out and acting holy. ISHTA stands for Integrated Science of Hatha, Tantra, and Ayurveda, and the combination of these things is present in every class with a very down to earth attitude. Teachers ask you to be in tune with your needs, whether it is time to respect your limitations or push beyond your boundaries. Competitiveness is discouraged and respect is encouraged. Knowledge is all around. What a naturally great studio to learn and grow in!” Cassie O.

“An excellent yoga studio. I have been practicing yoga for well over 15 years and am delighted to have found ISHTA Yoga. My practice and knowledge of my body/mind have deepened and improved. I am consistently met with smiles and encouragement by every one of the knowledgeable and friendly staff. My frequent visits to the various classes at ISHTA are regular and important parts of my week. I have been a monthly member for 5 months and intend to continue.” Hannah

“Amazing!!!!! I am in my 50s and have serious knee issues. All of the teachers have taken this into account in a personal attentive way — however, I don’t feel embarrassed or singled out. I feel that the teachers here “walk the walk,” not just “talk the talk.” I also instinctively trust any cosmology that encourages one to develop a community and a daily home practice. I love this place.” - Slehner

Yoga at its best. I have been practicing yoga for over 10 years and tried my fair share of studios. ISHTA Yoga is a true gem! The quality of teaching is consistently top and there is also the profound spiritual aspect that is so often lost in other studios/gyms these days. The space provides a wonderful, warm, nourishing, safe, noncompetitive atmosphere. The space is lovely and clean. I can only highly recommend ISTHA.”Natascha
