Like the hummingbird, Wangari Maatthai changed the world one tree at a time. On Earth Day in 1977 she planted seven trees in her village to honor Kenyan women Environmental leaders. Later, in 1986, she launched the Green Belt Movement, a grass-roots movement that uses tree planting as an entry point for self-determination, equity, improved livelihoods and security, and environmental conservation to raise community consciousness. In 2004 she was the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

We will remember that every effort towards change counts.

In the course of history, there comes a time when humanity is called to shift to a new level of consciousness. To reach a higher moral ground. A time when we have to shed our fear and give hope to each other. That time is now – Wangari Maathai
